Relay protection was invented over 160 years ago. It has changed considerably in the last 60 years, most notably in its reduced size.
Relay protection is a switching device that detects a fault and activates a circuit breaker to operate, isolating the faulty component from the rest of the system. They are compact and self-contained devices that detect abnormal conditions. Relay protection detects anomalies in a circuit by constantly measuring different electrical quantities under normal and fault conditions.
Voltage, current, frequency, and phase angle may change during fault conditions, and by changing one or more of these quantities, the presence, type, and location of the relay protection signal is notified. Upon detection of a fault, the relay will operate to close the tripping circuit of the circuit breaker. This causes the circuit breaker to disconnect and the faulted circuit to be disconnected.
Relay protection is used in substations to alert or quickly stop the operation of any component of the power system when it is operating abnormally.
Abnormal behavior of a component may cause damage or interference in the efficient operation of other parts of the system. Relay protection minimizes damage to equipment and interruption of service when electrical faults occur. Relays and other equipment that can minimize damage and improve service include protection of current transformers, voltage transformers, relay protection, delay relays, auxiliary relays, secondary circuits, trip circuits, and more.
Each component plays its own role, which is important in the overall operation of the program. Relay protection is a team effort of all these components. Relay protection also provides fault location and type indication.
